First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure

First impression was how humble the advocates were and how good they were at what they did.

I did not expect it but the lawyers were so reputed that each and everyone recognises the lawyers at all fora.

No formalities as such. Just introduced myself to ma’am and her associates.

The office is very well maintained. Was fully air conditioned and cleanliness was of the paramount there.

Main tasks

1) We were mainly asked to file replies.

2) Researching on topics related to the case allotted.

3) Finding judgments related to cases.

4) Assisting the advocates during arguments and witness examination.

Work environment and people

It was wonderful. All the associates are fairly young and conversed with us about their experiences and how they got to work with ma’am. You never get bored.

Even the seniors, though they don’t have a lot of time, but they still put in the effort to teach you as much as they can about law.

The best thing about everyone at the office is that of achieving success in the field of criminal law, they still find time to talk to the interns about what they are doing.

They sit with the interns and ask them about what they understood at the end of every case. If an intern was unable to understand they would open the Criminal Manual and teach them about it.

All in all the people were all very humble and most importantly they don’t make the interns feel out of place. Treat the interns as part of the office and not a visitor.

Best things

Get to witness the biggest and high-profile criminal cases. For eg: I saw the 2G scam case, ponty chadha murder case, batla house encounter case, etc.

Rebecca John ma’am herself. She’s what a lawyer should be according to me. Her arguments are a perfect blend of case law, facts and persuasion.

Bad things

No stipend. Not a lot of cases were there so there was a lot of idle time while we were at court.

Stipend

No stipend

Biggest Lessons

First lesson I learnt was that Criminal Law is the best and most interesting field of law, undoubtedly. It takes a lot of time, experience and patience to become a litigation lawyer.

Second lesson a lot of cases are heavily influenced by media trials. The police and the public prosecutors do not put their best foot forward.

Always stick to the basics of procedural law because a lot of cases are won and lost purely on technical grounds and not on merits.

For some inspiration, read Ms. Rebecca John’s interview in Bar and Bench here.
