JOB POST: Research Associate and Litigation Associate @ NLU Delhi’s Center on the Death Penalty: Salary of Rs. 45,000-60,000; Apply by April 4

The National Law University, Delhi is seeking to engage one Associate (Litigation) and one Associate (Research) to work with and further the aims of the Centre on the Death Penalty.

About the Centre

The Centre is established under the aegis of the National Law University, Delhi and was set up in August 2014 to undertake litigation, research and outreach relating to the death penalty.

Positions

The National Law University, Delhi is seeking to recruit individuals for the following contractual positions:

Associate (Litigation): 1 position

Associate (Research): 1 position

Applicants interested in both positions must make separate applications according to the procedure provided in this call.

Position for Associate (Litigation)

Responsibilities

A. Devise legal strategy and arguments for cases handled by the Centre and carry out related research.

B. Draft criminal appeals, review petitions, writ petitions, applications, rejoinders and other legal documents.

C. Brief and assist advocates on record and senior counsel.

D. Visit prisons across India to conduct detailed interviews with prisoners sentenced to death, their families and trial/appellate court lawyers as part of developing legal strategy in particular cases.

E. Regularly communicate with prison authorities to obtain case specific information and documents.

F. Collect case records maintained by prisons, previous lawyers, family members or court record rooms.

G. Present the work of the Centre at appropriate fora.

H. Organise training workshops and conferences.

I. Any other work that may be necessary to further the aims of the Centre.

Qualifications

A. Graduate with an LLB degree.

B. Enrolment with any State Bar Council.

C. Those with full-time litigation experience of at least six months will be preferred.

D. Ability to read/ write/ speak regional Indian languages will be an advantage but is not mandatory.

Compensation

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be approximately in the range of Rs. 45,000 – 55,000 per month.

Position for Associate (Research)

The purpose of the Centre’s research activities is to conduct empirical and doctrinal research on issues affecting prisoners sentenced to death in India analyse the current jurisprudence on the death penalty in India, develop areas of research, that have not yet been explored, on issues implicated in the death penalty discourse, develop and disseminate knowledge on the death penalty in India from different perspectives.

Responsibilities

A. Develop a framework and roadmap for various research projects.

B. Undertake empirical and doctrinal studies on issues affecting the death penalty in India.

C. Engage and coordinate with functionaries in the central and state governments.

D. Engage with the Department of Prisons and prison officials in various States.

E. Conduct interviews with prisoners sentenced to death and their families.

F. Follow the development of death penalty in various international organisations such as the United Nations, Organisation.

G. Keep abreast of research on the death penalty in India and throughout the world and undertake comparative research and analysis of death penalty jurisprudence.

H. Publish reports on the research projects undertaken by the Centre.

I. Present the work of the Centre at appropriate fora.

J. Any other work that may be necessary to further the aims of the Centre.

Qualifications

A. A Masters degree in social sciences, law or in related disciplines.

B. Those with two years experience in social research or socio-legal research will be preferred.

C. Knowledge and understanding of prisoners’ rights and law is desirable.

D. Ability to read/ write/ speak regional Indian languages will be an advantage but is not mandatory.

Compensation

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be within the range of Rs. 50,000-Rs. 60,000 per month.
