Duration in weeks. Days of work per week. Timings.

My internship period was supposed to be a normal 4 week period. At the end I had got an extension offer, unfortunately I had to stick to my plan as GNLU was about to start classes.

First and Third Saturday we worked, Sundays were off. We used to arrive at 10 am, though 10:30 am was good enough. We had to stay back till 7:30 pm on all days, except when we had work we left only after finishing it.

It could be well late into night one those days. Lunch break can be a good 40 minutes anytime in the afternoon.

Computers and stuff.

You are not supposed to carry in any laptop, ipad or anything of that sort except your phone. Not even a notebook or a hard drive. You’ll get a laptop to work on. Wifi is pretty fast. You are not supposed to use your own e-mail ID while communicating.

You can ask for laptops, printouts and access to the interns’ email ID from the receptionist, Ms. Deepika anytime. Access to major legal databases are available on request.

Work

I generally got research work. In the first few days I researched on many corporate terminologies and their widest possible legal meanings derived from case law.

Sometimes I was required to submit a meaning which helps the client. I mainly worked as an assistant to the associates, searching databases for citations, searching MCA website for various processes and contacts, I also helped them do some general work like truetyping, printing and formatting of documents, and in the process I learnt the whole flowchart of how work is brought into the office, executed and then sent back to the client or other Wadia Ghandy offices.

Later I did proofreading of agreements, letters, etc. By the end of my internship I did Due Diligence work for some big corporate companies.

My co-interns were both from 5th year of their law schools. Yeah we were 3 interns for the month of December.

Best part of the internship was in the last few days. I didn’t know anything about due diligence.

Ms. Veena Kolachina, associate, who had graduated from GNLU, took patience and some of her time to teach me the format, language and the whole objective behind this exercise.

Food, City and Shelter

Speaking of shelter, there are lots of PGs in Lajpat Nagar, which is the nearest PG hub. One of my co-intern used to stay at Lajpat Nagar which was almost walking distance from the office. Another co-intern used to travel from Vishwavidyalaya to the office. I used to stay with my friends at Saket, for me accommodation was never a problem.

From Saket a metro to INA and from there an auto would cost max Rs. 30 to take you to Defence Colony. While returning you can take an auto to AIIMS metro station for Rs. 30.

I tried buses too, there are many buses which link Malviya Nagar to Defence Colony.

For lunch you can approach the Defence Colony Market, it’s a nice place. You can find here everything of every price range. If you want to have lunch inside the office you can even get your food delivered.

Environment

Staff members are very friendly. Mr. Kesar the administrator takes great care of interns. You can ask from him for tea or coffee when you need.

Associates are very friendly, you can ask them any doubts you have before you start doing the work. I was at many occasions was suggested to not be too serious with internships just yet.

We celebrated on 25th Dec, by cutting a huge fruit cake. Associates exchanged gifts.

Tips

Please keep a note of all the work you do, you would be required to submit an internship worksheet, based on which your certificate would be made.

Do not assume things ever, if you have a doubt, it’s safer to ask than to be afraid of being ridiculed.

      Hi Purnima,

Most internships do not require any ‘special’ basic knowledge!

If you know how to do good legal research (use google effective, and work your way through Manupatra/SCC online) half of the job is done. Your ability to sift through large volumes of text and comprehend tough text is important too. The 3rd critical thing is the ability to write in flawless English.

With these 3 skills, any internship should go well for you.

Of course to get a PPO or a call back you need to generally ‘talk’ to your colleagues (not shying away from having lunch together) and come across as someone they’d want to have in office (someone friendly and happy, probably).
