Duration in weeks. Days of work per week. Timings.

It is 6 days a week, except for the second and fourth Saturday. All Sundays are off. Interns are expected to reach by 9:30 A.M., especially on Monday as Monday mornings are conducted on that day where developments in various fields of law are discussed and deliberated upon.

Interns can leave by 8:00 P.M, interns leaving by 8:00 is very much encouraged by all in the office.

First impression, first day, formalities

On the first day, I initially met Hemant Sir, (Partner). He supervises the HR of Vaish Mumbai. He talked about my interests and inclinations.

He advised me on how to have a safe stay at Mumbai which was very helpful. Then I was accompanied by an associate who introduced me to all the associates, senior associates, principal associates, head of practice areas, partners (if partners are free).

After that our Addresses and Phone numbers are taken and then we can start working.

So there are no lengthy formalities. Introducing the interns with the whole workforce acts as a very effective ice breaker.

Main tasks

The following tasks were undertaken at the internship:

I assisted in drafting/vetting the following documents (a) Inter-Corporate Loan agreement, (b) Employee loan agreement.

I assisted in undertaking a due diligence involving equipment leasing agreements.

Research was carried on the following (a) Revised requirements of SEBI for listed companies undertaking scheme of arrangement, (b) Modes approved by SEBI to achieve minimum level of public shareholding, (c) Meaning of the expression ‘workman’ under the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, (d) ‘Fraud’ & ‘Misrepresentation’ under the Indian Contract Act 1872, (e) Requirement for registration of ‘family arrangement’ under Registration Act, 1908, (f) Grounds for restraining enforcement of unconditional and irrevocable bank guarantee,

Another interesting piece of work came from the Real estate department that involved me and my co intern to identify and summarise Stamp duty rates for lease agreement, sale deed, leave and licence, Mortgage by deposit of title deeds, hypothecation / pledge for all the States and U.T.’s of India, for which almost a month was provided to us.

As per the internship policy, every intern has to make a presentation. The topic for my presentation was ‘Triggers under SEBI ( Substantial Acquisition of Shares & Takeovers) Regulations, 2011.

Work environment, people

All the people are very knowledgeable, hardworking , always ready to help, patient to hear out our doubts. Most importantly every one is approachable.

The best things AND the bad things

The best things is that work from diverse areas of law is assigned to interns. An intern can expect to directly work with a partner on an opinion, due dilligence, contracct, etc. The internship policy of the firm seems very much devoted to nurturing interns and ensuring that we are able to take on the responsibilities in the future.

Every true effort is rewarded with appreciation. Even when mistakes are committed,it is only guidance that will follow. Special mention should be made that interns are very very rarely given work that is clerical in nature.

For me the problem was that there were not many food options available, especially my Butter Chicken and Chicken Dimsums.
