How big was the office? Team strength?

The office was quiet large enough to accommodate around 30 people among which 5 were senior associates and 10 were associates. Others were clerks and employees.

Application procedure. Internship contact details

I got the internship from a source.

But you can get in touch to the branch office by sending them an internship application via mail.

Accommodation: how, where, how was it?

My cousin resides in Delhi, hence there was no need for searching for any accommodation. His house his located near Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and is near to the work place.

First impression. First day, formalities etc.

Well, the LS Davar and Co. office wasn’t too large, but big enough to accommodate around 30 people. First day I met the head of the patent department. I was already ready with my homework i.e. the paperwork and documents. He asked me my interests in copyright, trademarks and patents.

Then he asked which field I would like to work with?

I was sent to the trademark and copyright attorney Mrs. N.D. Dhendhup. I was instructed that she will be my mentor throughout my internship period.

Main tasks

First the tasks were quite simple. Go through the files and makes notes on them. Then I have to make an analysis with the sections of trademark and copyright with the issues of cases and draw an analogy, drafting a report on each case. My mentor was very helpful.

She tutored me how an application is drafted, how submissions are made, how to make arguments if the trademark examination-in-chief denies the trademark application. I drafted application for copyright and trademark.

I drafted written statements and counter written statements too.

Work environment, people

The other associates and employees at LS Davar were quite helpful. Whenever I was in need of a case file, there were always helping hands available. A tea which was served by the office boy in the morning made my day. Sitting in an air-conditioned office with harsh summers in Delhi was both a soothing experience.

As my mentor was very much dedicated to her work she worked day & night. The work culture of Delhi prefers timing sharp from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

But some of the associates worked hard till night shifts. Since I was just an internee, I got privileges to leave early. But sometimes, my mentor asked me to stay for the research work, and I had to stay till 9:00 pm.

Best things?

The best thing about my office was the wi-fi internet services available to all internees.

Ever if we get bored, we were allowed to make access to Facebook & Gmail which various other firms do not allow.

Bad things?

The bad thing I recollect was that the LS Davar office was under renovation. There were piles of case files in the office and we have to arrange them always as they use to fall down. This irritated me a lot.

What did you do to chill? Co-interns, colleagues

Yes, there were co-internees. We used to talk and make endless arguments when we have to draft statements from both the sides. But this helped us a lot to understand the practical system of IPR.

You can’t use theoretical aspects when it comes to practicality. You have to sit as a lawyer, think like a lawyer and make arguments.

Stipend/month

No stipend. But there were perks like coffee, whenever you like.

The associates offered me a lot of chocolates and sweets whenever there was an occasion.

Anything else you’d like to tell; Biggest lessons

There are no big or small lessons. They all depend on, how you take them. Well I learnt a lot. I have my honour in Corporate law. But working under such a firm, made me interested in Intellectual Property Rights.

It’s fun when you deal with copyright and trademark cases. You have to compare a mark with another and make arguments. If the associate is happy with your arguments, you get the credit and some perks too.
