About the Firm and Team Strength

Sibal & Co. is a litigation firm dealing mostly with Commercial Litigation and Criminal Litigation. Mr. Vivek Sibal is the Managing Partner along with two Senior Partners and five Associates. The firm attracts a lot of work from Debt Recovery Tribunal, Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction, Commercial and Criminal matters of various District Courts, High Courts and Supreme Court of India.

The firm also specializes in Arbitration and Mediation matters. An internee can learn a lot from Court visits, field visits and research work.

First Day Impression

The office is quite spacious with all Bare Acts, latest Books and Journals available for reference. There are separate rooms for Partners and Associates and a conference room for meetings. The setup is formal and welcoming. Dress code is strictly followed which is white shirt, black pants and a black blazer because you can be asked to accompany Partners or Associates to the Courts anytime.

I was given research work on a query related to Company Law by Senior Partner- Mrs. Pooja Mehra Saigal under whom I did my internship. She is very knowledgeable, helpful and makes sure that you learn something new everyday.

Main Tasks

I was asked to do a lot of research work related to Corporate Law, Criminal Law and Arbitration matters. Everyday work included pulling out case laws/judgments and reading case files to understand and build legal vocabulary along with understanding formats for different petitions to Courts and other Quasi-Legal foras. I also assisted in drafting a Special Leave Petition for a Consumer Matter.

They also asked us to visit Courts and Tribunals everyday to learn and observe the Court procedure. It is very important because what we read in books and what is actually applied has a lot of difference which can only be understood through observing the process. I also went to a few Arbitrations out of which one was with Hon’ble Retd. Justice A.P. Shah.

Work Environment

Sibal & Co. was my first internship and it was a sheer pleasure working with them. I learned so much during one month which I could not during my first year of law school. The Partners and Associates are quite helpful and approachable even though they are busy with work till neck throughout the day and you do not feel as an internee but as one of the permanent team member.

We used to sit in the same room with Associates and everyone has something to share with you and teach you something related to this field. There is a whole team of Court-Clerks who are no lesser than the lawyers themselves and they know each Court process through and through. You get to do everything by yourself, whether it is discussing a case, finding loopholes in a Statute or taking out photocopy of the documents.
