Duration of internship and timings

I did my internship from 1st July, 2016 to 30th July, 2016 (4 weeks). However, it can vary according to your personal discretion. Some of my co-interns did their internship for 2 weeks and some for 3 weeks too.

The timings were from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

First impression, First day formalities, Infrastructure

My first day at the tribunal was quite good. Everyone was supposed to be neatly dressed in formals as were the instructions. The interns had to report at the admin office on the first floor where we were asked to write letters of joining giving our basic details. Then, work was assigned to us by the deputy registrar.

It being an environment tribunal, the courtrooms were all decorated according to the theme. NGT has huge courtrooms with green curtains, green chairs and classy interior. After the exhaustive district courts, the properly air conditioned, well-built and well maintained infrastructure of the tribunal was relieving.

Main tasks

The main tasks included following the court proceedings of the hon’ble tribunal everyday and preparing synopsis on the cases from the cause list. The case files were easily available at the judicial section. Besides this, group as well as individual research problems related to different environmental issues and case laws were given to us by the Deputy Registrar.

My first research assignment was based on the Indian Merchant Shipping Act which required extensive research with reference to the case Samir Mehta Vs Union of India. Moreover, research problems on important ongoing cases including the Yamuna Plan and the Diesel Motor Vehicles were also given. A comparison of the waste management rules and its amendments was also done by the law interns. All these research problems and case synopsis were to be submitted at the end of the internship period.

Work Environment and People

The environment provided in NGT was very healthy and peaceful. The interns were provided a room where they could sit all by themselves and work according to their own discretion. The entire day was spent researching or preparing case synopsis or the rest of the time attending the court proceedings.

Therefore there was not much interaction with the employees in the court. However, the staff members in the judicial section were really cooperative and helpful. They were ready to guide the interns and provide us with the case files without any sluggishness.

Best things

The best thing about working in such a tribunal is that one gets to interact with co-interns who are from different prestigious institutions.

You get to boost up your knowledge by indulging in conversations related to various legal issues and discussing the life of a law student in different colleges can be helpful too.  It also enhances our legal circle which is really beneficial for a law student.

Also, we got to meet Justice Swatanter Kumar, hon’ble chairman of NGT. On the last day of our internship he addressed us and gave blessings for the future.

Bad things

One, there is no direct supervision which results in a careless attitude in interns. The interns are not monitored as such so they have to engage themselves in work on their own.

Two, the interns are supposed to bring their own resources for research. There is no access to the library, so they have to get their own laptops and internet connections.

Any other thing

The internship at NGT can be two fold: one can be a completely lazy soul, who can have fun at the internship and can take advantage of not getting monitored.

Two, he can learn a lot and gain the most from the experience which can really help him to reach the zenith.

Internship at this tribunal dedicated to environmental matters is a must for environment sensitive people.
