Application Process with contact details

NUJS has its tie-up with HSF-LBH. LBH is a dutch NGO working with the street children in Kolkata especially Howrah.

NUJS Students get an opportunity to volunteer with them. The selection procedure is done once in a year. They send the applications and the applicants are called for interview.

Duration of internship and timings

One year.

We volunteer throughout the year.

First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure

Meeting street-kids and listing to their stories was a completely different experience for me. There are no formalities as such, however due to the security reasons, the volunteers have to carry their identity cards along with them.

Earlier we were only allowed to visit the temporary shelter home which used to be a double story building where the student lived on the first floor. Now the volunteers deal with the permanent shelter home.

Main tasks

Child Counselling was the main task. Since the students in the temporary shelter home were not very shy/scared, the volunteers provided them friendly space so that they could share their stories.

Work environment and people

LBH Workers are sweet and polite.

Best things

This was the work which gave me self satisfaction. Going to LBH was kind of an excuse to take a weekly break from college life. When you play with them and bring smile to their faces you often tend to forget your petty issues.

Bad things

The workers only knew Bengali so it was difficult to communicate with them.

Stipend

None

Biggest Lessons

Meaning of life is learnt when you work with such kids.
