How big was the office? Team strength?
Khaitan Kolkata is a 3-floor office in a building which shares its wall with the Calcutta High Court. I worked with their indirect tax team consisting of 1 partner, 2 associates and other lawyers (whom I could never meet).
Application procedure. Internship contact details
I applied personally (in february) by sending my application to [email protected]
Accommodation: how, where, how was it?
I had my relatives in Kolkata and stayed with them.
First impression. First day, formalities etc.
We were given certain documents related to firm’s code of conduct, dress codes, sexual harassment policy and were asked to sign the confidentiality agreement. Soon, we were allotted our respective teams.
I got my second preference, Indirect Tax team. The HR gave me the names of 2 of my team members and I was asked to meet them in their chambers. My CV was already with them and therefore, without further delay, my associate gave me work.
Main tasks (in detail)
I was given various show cause notices received by our clients and was asked to research on the law points involved and draft a reply to each such notice. I drafted around 6 reply in a short span of 1 month. Also, I was also given an opportunity to file a writ petition in a taxation matter challenging certain provisions of law. This internship was an ideal combination of research & drafting work.
Work environment, people
Work environment was healthy and not very tiring. We could easily spend some leisure time during the lunch hours. No intern worked after 7 pm. However, my team was very particular with the work assigned to me with respect to the quality of work.
Best things? (Nothing is all bad)
This was my first internship with proper drafting work. I got to work with very friendly associates who gave me work, discussed law points and also commented on my work by telling me as to what are the required changes and helped me to improve a lot upon my work.
Also, Kolkata is a place where people are strict with respect to their work schedule. So, we were punctual to arrive in the office, and even to leave the office. None of the days in those 4 weeks was I required to leave after 7 pm.
Bad things? (Nothing is all good)
The coffee guy is very slow and leisure loving. They would bring coffee hours after you have asked, or sometimes pretend to forget that you have asked for one.
Yes. 4 weeks, INR 4000/-
Anything else you’d like to tell
The internship was a mixture of full work and enjoyment. From 11 am- 7 pm you work and enjoy the other hours. I had a lot of relatives in Kolkata, so I could go out every night to explore some or the other new place.
If you are in the city of Rosgullas, don’t forget to try the variety of food stuffs (specially non-vegetarian dishes) and the shopping.
Apart from this, Khaitan is a nice to place to work with if you don’t want a strict corporate environment, but only a good work experience and a big intern on your CV.Read More
