Application process with contact Details
Protik da is very much active when it comes to answering to e-mail or Gtalk and Facebook messages.
I had sent my CV along with a cover letter to his e-mail id ([email protected]) and got a reply within 24 hours. I had applied two months prior to my internship.
It was a four weeks internship for me in the month of July, 2013. Even though Protik da, works on Sunday, I had to go from Monday to Saturday.
Timings were court hours from 11am to 4pm followed by his chamber timings 6pm to generally 11pm. However, I had to stay back at night when the work load was more and was even allowed to leave his chamber early when there was not much work. Staying back at night on Saturdays is compulsory when the work is done till 4am. However, Friday evenings are off .
First impression, First day formalities, Infrastructure
I was asked to report to hid chamber at the Calcutta High Court on the first day. After a formal introduction of all the interns (we were three in number) we were asked to watch the court proceedings.
After court when I reached his private chamber in the evening I realized the amount of work that is actually done by an individual practitioner of a Chartered High Court who represents the State Government on high-stake matters.
There was not much work during the court hours, save for watching the proceedings at various court halls and to watch Protik da argue before the judges flawlessly. The major chunk of the work which is done at his chamber and the ones given to me were mainly research work.
I was asked to research on Land Laws, Securitization and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest Act, West Bengal Agricultural Marketing Produce (Regulations) Act, and various other acts as and when the need arose. I assisted him in preparing the points of arguments against a Writ Petition challenging the vires of West Bengal Agricultural Marketing Produce (Regulations) Act.
Besides this I was blessed with the opportunity to assist Protik da in drafting various legal documents that included a notice to the Central Board of Secondary Education and National Institute of technology-Durgapur and Rourkela, other notices, written statements and affidavits.
I have attended a number of client meetings with him in his chamber and the way he deals with each of his clients, treats them and advises them with patience is simply mind-blowing.
Work environment, People
There was not a single moment while I was interning under Protik da when I felt that I am just an intern. Everyone was treated equally and never did I feel anyone was rude to me or strict with me.
A friendly work environment prevailed all the time. But he can get really angry at times if he is disturbed while he drafts or attends client meetings and if the work given to the interns is not satisfactory.
However, he made it sure to rectify the flaws and guide us in case the work given to us was not produced in a satisfactory manner.
It was a wonderful and knowledgeable internship. It was always a treat to watch Protik da draft legal documents flawlessly. Though all
works are done very seriously, a chilled out atmosphere prevailed.
The delicious dinner on almost every night was a reward at the end of the day. Protik da’s knowledge and way of teaching is worth mentioning. Even if you are completely unaware of certain things he teaches you from the scratch.
You actually learn from an internship under the able tutelage of this wonderful litigator.
Though initially all the interns including me cribbed about the late working hours and compulsory stay at his chamber on every Saturday night, at the end of our internship none of us actually regretted having done the same.
None. However, on the final day of my internship Protik da gifted me with a book on the Original Side rude of Calcutta High Court that has been authored by him.
To be a good lawyer is different from being a successful lawyer. To be a good lawyer one has to sacrifice family life, the great outdoors and a social life.
