Nayi Dishayein: Summer Schools on Rethinking Development

1. Six week School (Classroom + Field Internship) 25th May to 6 July, 2016

2. Ten Day School (Classroom only) 6th to 15th June, 2016

The Sambhaavnaa Institute of Public Policy and Politics invites applications for it summer schools on ‘Rethinking Development’.

Aim

The aim of these programs is to engage young minds inclined towards developing a holistic understanding of contemporary socio-economic-political issues.

The key focus is to critically examine the current notion of ‘Development’ that pervades popular imagination and public policy.

The workshop through experiential sessions and collective dialogue provides an alternative and systemic perspective on socio-economic-political issues. The programs provides a window into the principles and strategies of various alternatives to ‘development’ – both at the grassroots and policy level.

Program Methodology

Interactive lectures, group work and group discussions, film screenings, collective reflection, and most importantly, live experience sharing by activists are deployed in the program to deepen our understanding of pertinent issues.

Language

English and Hindi.

Who should enlist?

If you are seeking answers to and have questions related to the above themes; or you are just figuring out how to frame the questions; or you are looking to understand the interconnections between different problems that you see around you; and if you want to reflect collectively, and creatively, welcome aboard!

Eligibility

1. Age: 20-26 years.

2. Step 1: Submit the application form latest by 5th April,2016.

Step 2: Completing any one of the three exercises suggested below and preparing the report of the same. Email the report (in Hindi or English) latest by 15th April.

This exercise is the most important part of application process.

3. Preference would be given to applicants who have volunteered/worked briefly with action groups / organizations working for change, in their local areas.

1. Six week School (Classroom + Field Internship) 25th May to 6 July, 2016

This program aims to bring together theory and practice.

The 2-week classroom component of this program will engage the participants via interactive lecture sessions, group work and group discussions, film screenings, collective reflection, and most importantly, live experience sharing by activists in an attempt to build a holistic and interconnected picture of the issues facing our society today.

This 2 week classroom component is split into two parts: the first part at the start of the program focuses on theory. This is followed by the 4 week field internship. This is followed by the second classroom component which focuses on reflections, experience sharing based on the internship.

The 4-week internship offers a chance to work with and learn from well-known organisations that are engaged on the ground.

In the past participants have worked with Narmada Bachao Andolan (M.P.), People’s Science Institute (Uttarakhand), Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (Rajasthan), Kheti Virasat Mission (Punjab), Hazard Centre (Delhi), Mahila Jan Adhikar Samiti (Rajasthan), Eklavya (M.P.), Jagrit Adivasi Dalit Sangathan (M.P.) and many others.

Program Fees: (a) Rs. 7400. This fee includes only the food and stay expenses during the classroom components of the program at Sambhaavnaa Institute.

[Need-based fee waivers are available. Do not let your inability to pay be the reason for not applying. However, the number of fee waivers we can offer are limited, so please apply for financial support only if you really need it. Do remember, there may be others who need it more than you!]

(b) Participants are expected to bear the cost of to and fro travel and food expenses of the internship. [Lodging will be provided by the hosting organization for internship period. No support is available from Sambhaavnaa Institute for this component]

2. Ten Day School (Classroom only) 6th to 15th June, 2016

Program Fees: Rs. 7600. This includes only food, stay expenses at Sambhaavnaa Institute.
