Prof (Dr) Shamnad Basheer holds two academic positions currently. He is a visiting professor of law at National Law School, Bangalore and the Honorary Research Chair Professor of IP law at Nirma University.
Shamnad graduated from the National law school of India University, Bangalore. He joined Anand and Anand, a leading intellectual property law firm in New Delhi, and went to head their Technology and Media law division.
He then left for higher studies at the University of Oxford, where he completed his BCL (as a Shell Centenary scholar) and MPhil and DPhil as a Wellcome Trust scholar.
He began his academic career by joining the George Washington University Law School in Washington DC as the Frank H Marks Visiting Associate Professor in IP Law. In 2008, he returned to India, joining the National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata in November 2008 as the first Ministry of Human Resource Development Chaired Professor in Intellectual Property law.
In 2015, he was awarded the Infosys Prize in Humanities by a jury comprising Nobel Laureate, Prof Amartya Sen.
While he keeps one foot in academia, and the other in practice (public interest IP law mainly), his hands are all over the place, with some initiatives in the social sector space (such as IDIA).
