6th NUJS Parliamentary Debate Tournament, 2013
The Literary and Debating Society of the NUJS, Kolkata will be conducting the 6th NUJS Parliamentary Debate Tournament, 2013 from the 25th – 28th of January, 2013. (Below all copied from email).
Format: We at NUJS shall continue to follow the 3 on 3 Asians format of Debate. This is a format we know and understand, moreover we truly enjoy it! The tournament shall also be open.
For the sake of clarification, this means that any three individuals may form a team and participate at our tournament. It is not necessary that they belong to the same institution or any institution at all.
We shall also continue the tradition of having a separate novice break to the semi-finals. For the avoidance of doubt a novice team shall be one in which 2 of its members have participated in no more than 2 debate tournaments of any format in India or abroad.
Adjudication Core: We are firmly of the view that a quality adjudication core and concomitantly that of any tournament, is dependent not only on individuals who have been successful in the course of their debating careers, but the core must also be one that represents a diversity of perspectives on debating.
Keeping this in mind we are proud and thrilled to have four especially qualified individuals from across debating circuits on our Adj Core for this edition of the debate. They are: Arun Mal (NUJS), Pranay Bhatia (ex-IIT, Bombay), Sinha Ibna Humayun (ex-North South University, Dhaka) and Uttara Gharpure (ex-NLSIU, Bangalore).
All of them are indisputably brilliant debaters and judges. For more information about their experience and achievements please visit our website here.
Prize Money: We are mindful of the fact that this has come to be a contentious issue on the debating circuit and are therefore working hard to ensure that it is substantial as well as paid in a timely manner. At this stage it stands at Rs. 2,00,000/-, we will keep you posted on any changes in the same.
We will be offering prize money for the following categories: Winning Team, Runners Up Team, Winning Novice Team, Runners Up Novice Team, Semi-Finalists, Quarter Finalists, Octa Finalists, 2 Best Speakers and the 3 Best Adjudicators. Certificates of participation shall be issued to all.
Registration: The registration fee for each Indian Debater or Adjudicator will be Rs. 1500/- per person. The fee for International Debaters or Adjudicators is shall be $50 per person.
This fee shall be inclusive of accommodation for 4 days of the tournament, 3 meals a day, entry to the break night party and transportation to and from the accommodation to the debate venues.
Registration for the tournament is now open. See here. To register as an Institution, Cross Team or Independent Adjudicator one individual must sign up as a team manager, add his/her institution or team name (in the case of cross teams) to the existing list and request the number of teams and adjudicators they would like to register.
We will confirm the number of slots allotted after this is done. After you have received an e-mail confirming your registration you may proceed to enter details of each individual participant.
In case you have any doubts on how to register please visit this site or do feel free to contact any member of the Literary and Debating Society.
Registrations will close on 25th December, 2012. We have a team cap of 70 teams and permit up to 3 teams per institution.
While there is no cap on the number of adjudicators an institution may send to compete at the tournament we require every team to comply with the N=1 rule i.e. every team must be accompanied by at least one adjudicator. We urge you to please register at the earliest so that we may make the necessary arrangements, especially with respect to accommodation, well in advance.
Adjudication Subsidy: We hereby also invite applications from experienced debaters to send in their debate and adjudication CVs to [email protected] to avail of the travel and registration subsidy that we are offering. These applications shall be forwarded to members of core, they shall decide on whom to subsidize.
As with each edition of the tournament, we look forward to international teams participating at the tournament. We request all international teams to remember to fill out their passport details in the registration forms so that we can send you invitation letters as soon as possible for the purpose of procuring your visas.
We promise you great hospitality, enlightening debates and an overall memorable experience.Read More
